Currently there are three classes of Amateur Radio licenses:
To obtain a Technician class license you must pass the Element 2 written examination. To add limited HF privilges, you may also optionally take and pass the Element 1 exam, a 5 word per minute morse test. In this case you will have a Technician Plus Class license. For a General class license, you must pass the 5 word per minute Element 1 exam. You must also have passed the Element 2 and 3 written exams. To upgrade from a Technician class license issued after February 14,1991, you need only take the Element 1 and 3 tests. If you currently hold a Technician Plus or were licensed as a Techician class prior to February 14,1991, credit will be given for Element 1 and you need only pass the Element 3 exam. The highest class Amateur Radio class license, requires passing Elements 1, 2, 3, and 4. Element 1 is the 5 word per minute morese code test. The remaining elements are written exams. If you are upgrading from a General (or the obsolete Advancced) class license, you need only pass the Element 4 exam. Please note that if you currently hold the obsolete Novice class license, no credits will be issued except for element 1. You must take the current Elements 2, 3 or 4 exams to upgrade your license.
